![]() “The isotope work is quite helpful and can be used to fingerprint the source,” said Tom Richard, director of Pennsylvania State University’s Institute for Energy and the Environment. Shallow natural gas is quite common in Pennsylvania and has a different isotopic pattern from the deeper sources in the Marcellus. To track the source of the gases, Vengosh and his colleagues analyzed elemental variations called isotopes, which provide a birth mark of sorts for the gas. The Marcellus formation lies much deeper, between 1,500 meters and 2,500 meters below ground.ĭrilling for shale gas in the Marcellus took off in 2009 when the number of wells quadrupled compared to the previous year. The researchers took water samples from 141 wells drilled to a depth of 60 meters to 90 meters, 59 of which were within one kilometer of a drilling site. “You don’t find those components outside of the Marcellus formation and there is no biological source,” Vengosh, a professor of geochemistry and water quality at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, told Circle of Blue. ![]() Propane was found less often, in just 10 samples, all within one kilometer of a gas well.įinding both ethane and propane in the samples is evidence that drilling operations rather than natural seeps, as industry boosters like to claim, are contaminating groundwater, said Avner Vengosh, a study co-author. Ethane was found in 30 percent of the water samples, and concentrations were 23 times higher for samples taken within one kilometer of drilling sites. ![]() Researchers measured concentrations of two other gases associated with natural gas extraction, ethane and propane. “You don’t find those components outside of the Marcellus formation and there is no biological source.” The new study, however, tested water supplies for more than just methane and found a stronger correlation with fracking. None of the three studies has found groundwater contamination from the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, also called fracking. Led by researchers at Duke University, the study is consistent with the results of two other Duke studies that found methane contamination in water wells in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale formation and a hydrological connection between deep and shallow aquifers. The authors suggest that poorly constructed gas wells are the most likely source of contamination, an assumption that will be addressed more rigorously in a future paper. Methane was found in 82 percent of samples. Distance also plays a role in water contamination caused by hydraulic fracturing, the production technique that is splitting open shale rock to release trapped gas and powering the energy boom.ĭrinking water wells within one kilometer of shale-gas drilling sites in northeastern Pennsylvania had methane levels six times higher on average than wells farther away, according to a study published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ![]() In the United States’s new natural gas game, distance matters to the bottom line – distance to water supplies, to waste disposal sites, and to hungry foreign markets. Drinking water wells within one kilometer of drilling sites show higher levels of methane, according to a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A natural gas drilling site operates adjacent to a farm in northeastern Pennsylvania. ![]()

Hopefully, these answerless questions will be addressed in Scourge – but for now, we’re left with quite a bit of mystery. ![]() That’s not to say that the cards are totally unrepresentative of the storyline, though. Here are almost fifty flavor texts from Legions that show both what is and what is not happening in the novel. In Legions, the mysterious activity is depicted by the following quotes: We’ll start with the greatest oversight in both Onslaught and Legions: The Riptide Project was mentioned in both sets, yet appears in neither book. Most, however, wouldn’t return home at all.”~ ~”Many wizards came to the Riptide Project hoping to return home with answers. ![]() Okay, so here’s a clue about the Riptide Project. In The Real Story Behind Onslaught, I noted that”…many blue cards reference the Riptide Project, apparently something Empress Llawan is instigating to control the Mirari.” Well, this quote leads me to be less sure about the leader of the Cephalids in all of this. ~Those who lead others to wisdom become the wisest themselves.~ So, rather than answering a question, this quote poses a new one: Whose is the Riptide Project and why do all the wizards know about it but we don’t? We learned in the Odyssey Cycle that Llawan doesn’t care too much about the outside world, and an open invitation to wizards to help her on this project just seems out of character. The other”Riptide Representative” I chose for this article is this supposed”director” of the project. As we’ll soon see, it’s quite obvious that much (if not all) of the Riptide Project is geared towards recreation of the slivers. Follow them here and see if you arrive at the same conclusions I did: If this is so, I have to question why the Director’s quote deals with the spread of wisdom – this isn’t the Tolarian Academy.īut, in trying to make sense of what, exactly, this business is all about, I’ve tried to arrange the sliver quotes in such a fashion that they might read together to paint a picture. ![]() ~The directors of the Riptide Project wanted instant results on the sliver experiments. ![]() ![]() ![]() Set along the fertile Nile River and at one time extending from today’s Syria to Sudan, the civilization is most known for its pyramids, tombs and mausoleums and the practice of mummification to prepare corpses for the afterlife. Perhaps the most romanticized of past civilizations, ancient Egypt stood as one of history’s most powerful empires for more than 3,000 years. They are the oldest of the so-called Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. And it was Babylonian astronomy that first divided the year into 12 periods named after constellations-what the Greeks would later evolve into the zodiac. They also created the base 60 numeric system, which led to the 60-second minute, 60-minute hour and 360-degree circle. The cuneiform writing system, used to establish the Code of Hammurabi, is among the most famous Mesopotamian advancements. “Those who know how to research and write run the civilization and everyone does the grunt work.” “Mesopotamia is the earliest urban literate civilization on the globe-and the Sumerians, who established the civilization, established the ground rules,” says Kenneth Harl, author, consultant and professor emeritus of history at Tulane University. Mesopotamia was also home to the world’s first urban cities, including Babylon, Ashur and Akkad. The culture that grew up between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is noted for important advancements in literacy, astronomy, agriculture, law, astronomy, mathematics, architecture and more, despite near-constant warfare. Meaning “between two rivers” in Greek, Mesopotamia (located in modern-day Iraq, Kuwait and Syria) is considered the birthplace of civilization. Here’s a look at six of the earliest civilizations-and the legacies they left to the world. “A great many of the details of modern life, not just in the Middle East and the West, but across the world, have origins that go back for thousands of years to the ancient cultures in their respective regions,” says Amanda Podany, author and professor emeritus of history at California State Polytechnic University. These ancient complex societies, starting with Mesopotamia, formed cultural and technological advances, several of which are still present today. While modern civilizations extend to every continent except Antarctica, most scholars place the earliest cradles of civilizations-in other words, where civilizations first emerged-in modern-day Iraq, Egypt, India, China, Peru and Mexico, beginning between approximately 40 B.C. ![]() ![]() ![]() When are you planning on applying to medical school? Students who are thoughtful and spend the time upfront creating a solid study schedule tend to perform much better on the MCAT.ĭon’t be afraid to spend a few hours designing your MCAT study schedule! It will pay off in the long run when you crush the MCAT and get that acceptance call from your dream medical school. What’s more, a large number of these low MCAT scorers didn’t dedicate sufficient time to developing a study schedule because they weren’t “ready to completely start studying” or were “just getting started in the process.”Ĭreating a study schedule is the single most important piece of the MCAT puzzle that you will complete at the beginning of your test prep as it serves as a roadmap, friend, and accountability tracker throughout your entire MCAT journey. Here’s the bottom line: lots of otherwise qualified students don’t get into medical school because of a low MCAT score. The small state school student proved a high science and critical thinking aptitude, and admissions committees will likely choose the small state school student, despite the differences in the undergraduate reputation. Why do admissions committees care so much about the MCAT? The MCAT is an attempt to compare students who come from a broad range of backgrounds, majors, regions, undergraduate institutions, and much more.įor example, let’s say that a Stanford student and a student from a small state school have the same application, but the Stanford student scored a 505 on the MCAT while the small state school student scored a 518. If you think of medical school admissions as a tiered evaluation process, the MCAT falls in the top tier of what admissions committees look at when they evaluate an applicant, in addition to your GPA and personal statement. Odds are these students had less-than-stellar MCAT scores, one of the most important factors admissions committees consider when evaluating applications. You’ve probably heard stories about premed students who went to well-respected colleges, had extensive clinical and volunteer experiences, worked in the same lab for multiple years, and achieved a 3.9 GPA but were still rejected from every medical school that they applied to.
